Japan’s scenic hot springs town restricting tourists amid fights over the best photo spots

Ginzan Onsen, a popular Japanese hot spring town known for its scenic snowy views, has begun limiting entry to day trippers during winter peak season, becoming another destination to tackle overtourism amid the country’s record influx of travelers.

Located in the Yamagata region about 260 miles north of Tokyo, the onsen is one of the most famous in Japan, drawing around 330,000 visitors each year.

Travelers from around the world flock to the 300-year-old town during winter not only for a dip in the onsen but its picturesque scenery of traditional Edo-period buildings blanketed in snow – speculated to be the inspiration for Oscar-winning animator Hayao Miyazaki’s film Spirited Away.

But its popularity has also caused problems for residents in the otherwise tranquil town, with reports of altercations over photo spots and parking places.

“Many guests became angry (were shouting) over good spots for the purpose of taking pictures, leading to traffic rules being broken, cheating, and making people seek better places and easier ways than others,” the onsen said on its website, regretting that its “vague management” had caused issues.

Starting January 7, those wanting to enter the onsen town after 5pm will be required to purchase a ticket, according to Ginzan Onsen Information Center. Visitors without bookings at local hotels will be banned after 8pm.

Tickets, including the bus rides, cost 1150 yen, about $7.

Those driving themselves will be required to park at a nearby tourist center and use shuttle buses to get into the town.

Друзья, хотел поделиться мыслями на тему российского спорта и прошедшего сезона. В этом году спорт вновь стал важной частью наших обсуждений, от лыжных гонок и этапов Кубка мира до фигурного катания и олимпийских надежд.
Недавно читал новости на Кравцов: РІ конькобежном спорте Рё шорт-треке РІ Сочи планируем завоевать 7 медалей - Чемпионат и наткнулся на статью о федерации лыжного спорта России. Наши сборные продолжают показывать сильные результаты, но подготовка к чемпионатам мира и будущим Олимпийским играм требует всё больше ресурсов. Александр Большунов — настоящий лидер в лыжах, его гонки вдохновляют миллионы!
Что касается фигурного катания, здесь мы тоже традиционно сильны. Евгения Плющенко и другие тренеры работают с новой сменой талантов, которые смогут покорить мир на будущих Олимпиадах. Российский этап Кубка мира был настоящим праздником спорта!
Пока весь мир ждет следующую Олимпиаду, я думаю, важно помнить: за каждым успехом наших спортсменов — огромный труд. Делитесь своими мыслями, какая новость из российского спорта вас больше всего зацепила в этом сезоне?

Now he is reportedly exploring what could be his next political project: Becoming an adviser to Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee for president, according to a report from the Wall Street Journal.

Musk has discussed advising Trump should he win the 2024 election, the Journal reported, citing unnamed sources. Musk called Trump directly via cellphone to explore a role that could potentially give Musk significant influence over US policies. It’s not clear based on the Journal’s reporting which party initiated conversations about the potential role.

The Trump campaign did not respond to CNN’s requests for comment; Musk also did not respond to the Wall Street Journal, but Brian Hughes, a Trump campaign spokesperson, told the outlet: “President Trump will be the only voice of what role an individual plays in his presidency.”

Musk pushed back on the Journal report in a post on X Thursday, saying: “There have not been any discussions of a role for me in a potential Trump Presidency.”

However, a potential role in a future Trump administration could expand upon the role that Musk played in the previous Trump administration, when he served on two business advisory councils before quitting them over Trump’s decision to pull out of the Paris climate agreement.

The privilege of whispering in Trump’s ear, should he win reelection, could give the billionaire – who is increasingly steeped in the rhetoric and imagery of the conservative culture wars – even more power on the global stage. Reporting that Musk and Trump’s relationship has improved comes after Musk’s politics have become more aligned with Trump’s.

Musk has made supporting right-wing causes — and extremism, in some situations — increasingly central to his identity. He has vocally opposed Covid-19 lockdowns and embraced anti-vaccine ideology. “I would say it’s somewhat unusual in the number of outbursts it’s been having,” Schleicher said. “On the other hand, it’s not like you have good records from the past to really let you know what is typical. And I suspect given the fairly large number of outbursts that have happened over the last eight months, that this is very clearly a usual occurrence for Pons-Brooks.”

Comets are chunks of dust, rock and ice, essentially frozen remnants from the formation of the solar system. They also contain frozen elements such as carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide.

Comets heat up and brighten as they approach the sun, and some of the frozen gases stored in comets don’t need to warm up much before they begin to turn into vapor, Schleicher said.
